Background of the Study
Tourism has emerged as a dynamic force in promoting economic growth and cultural exchange, particularly in regions with rich historical and cultural heritage. Badagry Local Government Area, Lagos State, is renowned for its historical significance and cultural attractions, which have become key drivers of tourism. Over recent years, increased domestic and international tourism has transformed local economies by generating revenue, creating employment opportunities, and stimulating the development of related sectors such as hospitality and transportation (Obi, 2023). However, the influx of tourists also brings challenges to the preservation of local culture. Traditional practices, artisanal crafts, and indigenous lifestyles may be altered or commercialized to cater to tourist expectations, potentially leading to cultural dilution. The interaction between tourism and local culture is complex, as it can foster both cultural revitalization and transformation. While tourism contributes to economic diversification and infrastructure development, it also risks eroding cultural authenticity if not managed carefully (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the multifaceted impacts of tourism on both the local economy and cultural heritage in Badagry. It explores how tourism has influenced local business development, employment patterns, and community identity. Through a combination of economic data analysis, cultural assessments, and stakeholder interviews, the research aims to provide a balanced view of the benefits and challenges associated with tourism in Badagry. The study seeks to inform sustainable tourism practices that harmonize economic development with the preservation of cultural heritage, ensuring that local communities can benefit without compromising their unique identities (Obi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Tourism in Badagry has undoubtedly brought economic benefits; however, it also poses risks to local culture and identity. The commercialization of cultural practices to attract tourists has led to concerns about the loss of authenticity and cultural erosion (Obi, 2023). Local artisans and cultural practitioners often face pressure to modify traditional practices to meet tourist expectations, which can undermine cultural integrity. Additionally, the rapid expansion of tourism infrastructure has sometimes led to environmental degradation and displacement of local communities. These challenges highlight the need for a sustainable approach that balances economic gains with cultural preservation. This study seeks to identify the negative impacts of tourism on local culture and the economy in Badagry and to propose strategies that mitigate these effects while promoting sustainable tourism development (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the economic benefits of tourism in Badagry.
To assess the impact of tourism on local cultural practices.
To recommend strategies for sustainable tourism development that preserve cultural heritage.

What measures can ensure sustainable tourism that protects cultural heritage?
Research Hypotheses:
Tourism significantly boosts the local economy in Badagry.
Increased tourism activity is associated with cultural dilution.
Sustainable tourism practices can balance economic growth and cultural preservation.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the dual impact of tourism on the economy and cultural heritage in Badagry. Its findings will provide insights for policymakers, tourism operators, and community leaders to develop sustainable tourism practices that promote economic growth while preserving local culture. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the cultural and economic dynamics of tourism and offers practical recommendations for long-term sustainability (Obi, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of tourism on local culture and the economy in Badagry. It focuses on the local dynamics and does not extend to broader regional or national tourism trends.
Definitions of Terms:
Tourism: The activity of traveling for leisure, business, or cultural purposes.
